The Citadelle, also known in Haiti as Citadelle LaFerriere or Citadelle Henry Christophe, is one of Haiti’s top tourist attractions and a national landmark. It is a massive fortress built atop a mountain between 1805 and 1820 designed to provide a defense for the newly independent nation of Haiti against French attack. It is located about 17 miles south of Cap-Haitien and near the town of Milot.

Since moving our annual surgical trips to the north in 2006, each year the new, and some veteran, members of our group make a trip to the Citadelle. This has again been facillitated by Ben Stubenberg with the assistance of Adouin Zephrin. Our members are usually accompanied by members of the Cap-Haitien fire department who provide escort.
