Jeanette is a fairly remote community in a mountainous area of southern Haiti approximately 70 miles west (about a 4 hr drive) of Haiti’s capital Port-au-Prince. The Milwaukee Haiti Project has been involved in Jeanette since 1982 when a church and school were first constructed. Over the years the Project has continued to assist the people of Jeanette in various basic needs including health care, education, construction, and sanitary water. Typically a group will travel to Jeanette 1-2 months prior to the surgical mission for the purpose of general health screenings and establishing surgical referrals. The individuals who are found to have surgical conditions will then be instructed to travel to Hopital St. Croix in Leogane a few weeks later to meet the surgical mission when it is scheduled to arrive. Often, those that are referred for surgical consultation will travel together to Leogane.
In certain years, members of the surgical mission will have a couple of extra days in their schedule to allow for a visit to Jeanette. The trip from Hopital St.Croix in Leogane (where the surgical mission stays) to Jeanette is an adventurous, if not occasionally perilous 2-3 hr trip, with winding and primitive roads through mountainous terrain. The reward is outstanding scenery and a memorable visit with a close-knit rural people. On one such occasion a few years ago, our surgical group was fortunate enough to be able to travel to Jeanette and attend a confirmation at St. Marc’s Episcopal Church.
