Hopital Bon Samaritan 2006-present

Our surgical mission moved to northern Haiti in 2006 to a town called Limbe near Cap Haitien. In 2006 we began annual trips to Hopital Bon Samaritan. Visit the hospitals website for more detailed information. >>HBS The hospital was founded in 1953 by the late William Hodges, MD (05/1924-09/1995) and his family continues to manage the hospital.

The climate in Limbe was quite a change for us compared to our prior experience in Leogane. The evenings are much cooler and more pleasant. The accomodations at HBS have been outstanding and the food excellent. We have greatly enjoyed the staff of the hospital including OR personnel, administration, housekeeping, and cooks.

Our trips have been well-organized with the staff of the hospital. Advance communications between our group and HBS outlining the makeup of the surgical group each year, allows the on site medical staff to screen potential surgical patients for us prior to our visit. Typically we will begin seeing patients upon our arrival and often will begin surgical cases the same day as most patients will have already been prepared for possible surgery in advance. Our core group each year has consisted of 3-4 surgeons, 4-6 OR and recovery nurses, 2 anesthesiologists, a team organizer, and an interpreter. Each year we also have students or residents travelling with us. We will generally work 4 1/2 surgical days, leaving the final 1/2 day for departure rounds and handing off post-surgical care to on site medical staff. Typically we will have done between 50-65 surgical cases in that time frame including goiters, hernias, hydrocoeles, prostate surgery, abdominal cases, etc. Following are photo galleries of our experience at HBS:
