Travel (2006 to present)

Starting in 2006 we began travelling to the northern part of Haiti through Cap Haitien. Our travel since 2006 has been greatly facillitated by Mr Ben Stubenberg who has an extensive experience in Haiti, initially as a political observer under the employ of the US government. He has organized surgical trips to northern Haiti and is currently assisting in the development of Haitian tourism projects from his new home in Turks and Caicos. Since 2010, Ben and Chloe Zimmerman have managed Caicu Naniki, a sports travel firm located in Providenciales – >>http://www.caicunaniki.com/ .

Duchenne had a dramatic facial deformity caused by a mandibular ameloblastoma and underwent a complete resection of his jaw with subsecquent reconstruction at St Lukes Medical Center in December, 2010.

Since 2006, our travels to the northern part of Haiti have varied from direct flights to Cap Haitien originating in Fort Lauderdale, to our most recent itinerary which takes us from the states to Providenciales, Turks and Caicos, followed the next day by a short hop from Provo to Cap Haitien. Travel to Cap Haitien as of 2013, has required a night layover, either in Fort Lauderdale, or in Providenciales, however we have been able to return back home in a single day (that is with a great deal of luck and minimum travel delays).

Over the past few years our flights have been on small aircraft, usually anywhere from 18 to 30 seats. Our flights from Fort Lauderdale were on Lynx Air and took about 2 1/2 hrs. Lynx suspended their operations in 2009. In recent years we have travelled to Providenciales using domestic airlines. Then the following morning we fly to Cap Haitien on Air Turks and Caicos which takes only 40 minutes.

In addition to getting there, one also has to secure reliable and safe ground transportation in Haiti. We have been able to get around northern Haiti quite safely with the assistance of Ben’s and our good friend, Adouin Zephrin. Adouin was the Fire Chief of Cap Haitien and currently is delegue’ du Departement du Nord – Haiti’s governmental representative for the northern district, similar to what a governor is in the states. Adouin has also helped us immensely getting through Haitian customs in recent years.
