This page required editing in 2010 due to a massive earthquake that struck Haiti in January, 2010. Leogane was near the epicenter of the earthquake and an estimated 90% of the town was destroyed. The following is an accounting of our experience in Leogane between 1996 and 2006….
Leogane is located roughly 30 kilometers west of Haiti’s capital Port-au-Prince. It is a most interesting trip from Port-au-Prince to Leogane, particularly the stretch of road that passes through the town of Carrefour, a town you can rely on for memorable sights and scents. After an average 2 hr drive we arrive in Leogane.
The streets of Leogane are of primitive construction and a bit less congested than Port-au-Prince and its surroundings but still can be quite lively – even at night when one might be entertained by a screeching dog fight in the middle of the night or, during Lent, a raucous rah-rah band and parade.
Basic needs including food and clothing are typically purchased from street venders or in open-air markets.
    
Leogane Monuments
The area surrounding Leogane is largely rural with farms, sugar cane plantations, and molasses factories.
On one of our walks through the country side – here Stormie and Heidi are informing Gina that there are no public restrooms nearby and that she’ll need to find a bush.
Our ultimate destination in Leogane is Hopital St. Croix – an approximately 120 bed hospital considered one of the more modern and well-equipped hospitals in Haiti
We eat and sleep at the guest house on the grounds of Hopital St. Croix.
Things get a bit more lively in the dining room at the end of an exhausting day of surgery. Here we are reviewing the busy day over dinner and a bottle or two of our favorite beverage – Prestige.
In 2005, we were fortunate to have air-conditioning available round the clock. In 2003, we had essentially no air-conditioning and electricity was available about 2 hours a day. Every year has been a little different.
In the occasional event that there is down time, we get a chance to catch some rays at the local “beach” – the concrete beach that is, located on the roof of one of the Hopital St Croix buildings. Careful to not impale yourself on the rebar.
